Santee Photographer — Nature's Paradise in East County

With pristine lakes and abundant recreational areas, Santee provides the perfect natural setting for outdoor family sessions and engagement photography. I've shot Santee sessions in every season and I know exactly where to catch the best light.

Why I love shooting in Santee

Santee is water and trails. Santee Lakes has seven interconnected lakes and the shorelines all photograph differently — Lake 5 has the mature shade cover I use for summer family sessions, Lake 2 has the pier for engagement portraits. Mission Trails at the western edge gives me chaparral and boulders for a totally different look inside the same city.

On the light: The lakes hold onto morning mist longer than anywhere else in East County, which is a gift for moody engagement frames.

Logistics worth knowing: Santee Lakes charges a small day-use fee and is stroller-friendly on paved paths, which matters for family sessions with older grandparents.

Landmarks & neighborhoods

Couples and families I've worked with in Santee love landmarks like Santee Lakes, Mission Trails Regional Park, Carlton Hills Golf Club, and neighborhoods including Carlton Hills, Carlton Oaks, Riverford. Each brings its own texture to a session — historic charm, ocean breeze, or family-friendly open space. Tell me which neighborhood you live in or where you got engaged and I'll build the shoot around it.

Santee Photography FAQs

Which Santee Lakes lake is best for photos?

Lake 5 for shade and family sessions, Lake 2 for the pier and engagement portraits, and Lake 4 at sunrise for reflection shots. All three are within a five-minute walk of each other.

Are Mission Trails permits required?

Not for small portrait sessions on the main trails. If you want to shoot at Kumeyaay Lake specifically, I check the park calendar for the day since permits are required for weddings there.

Can we do a sunrise session in Santee?

Yes — sunrise on Santee Lakes with morning mist is one of my favorite East County sessions. We meet at the gate 15 minutes before it opens.

Do you charge extra to travel to Santee?

No — every session and wedding includes free travel to all 26 San Diego County cities, including Santee.
