Engagement Photography in San Diego — my approach

Engagement sessions are a warm-up for your wedding day and a chance to build real chemistry on camera. Most couples arrive nervous and leave surprised at how easy it was. I give you clear direction throughout, keep the pace slow, and photograph the in-between laughter — those are the frames that end up on save-the-dates and above the fireplace.

Common problems I solve

You've never been photographed together and it feels awkward

This is the entire reason engagement sessions exist. Ten minutes in you'll stop noticing the camera; I promise.

You can't decide on outfits

I send an outfit-and-color guide once your date is booked with 6–8 palettes that photograph well in San Diego light, plus flat-lay examples of what actually works together.

You want the session to feel like you

Tell me your favorite date spot. I've shot engagement sessions at coffee shops, at the couple's home, on hiking trails, in bookstores — the more personal the location, the better the pictures.

You need save-the-date images fast

Rush turnaround is available if you're on a tight print deadline. Ask at booking and I'll build it into the schedule.

What's included

  • Pre-session consultation to plan location, timing, and outfits
  • Professional on-location direction and gentle posing
  • Full private online gallery with high-resolution edits
  • Personal print release for family and social sharing
  • Sneak peek gallery within 72 hours of the session
  • Access to fine-art print shop and heirloom albums

My process, start to finish

  1. 1. Inquiry & consult. Send a note or call 760-539-9932. I'll reply within 24 hours to talk timeline, location, and vision — no hard sell, just a real conversation about what you're picturing.
  2. 2. Book & plan. A 25% retainer holds your date. I send a full prep guide covering wardrobe palettes, kid-wrangling tricks, timeline math for weddings, and exactly when to arrive for the best golden-hour light at your chosen location.
  3. 3. Session day. Warm, patient, unhurried. I direct the whole time so you always know what to do — and still catch every real moment in between. For weddings I coordinate quietly with your planner, DJ, and family so the day flows.
  4. 4. Sneak peek & delivery. Sneak peeks in 72 hours. Full gallery in 2–6 weeks depending on the session type, delivered through a private online gallery you'll have forever. You can share, download, and print directly from the gallery.
  5. 5. Prints, albums, and beyond. After delivery I'm still here — I design heirloom albums, help you pick wall art sizes, and store your full-resolution gallery so you can order more prints years later.

Locations I love in San Diego

A few of my favorite San Diego spots for engagement photography — click any city for local tips, best shooting hours, parking notes, and my go-to backup locations:

Favorite engagement spots: Sunset Cliffs at low tide, Windansea Beach, the tide pools at La Jolla Cove, Balboa Park's Alcazar Garden, downtown Little Italy at blue hour, the Cuyamaca oak groves, and the Torrey Pines beach at low light. I'll suggest three based on your vibe and drive time.

Pricing & timeline

Engagement sessions start at $450 and include a 60–90 minute shoot, one outfit change, a private online gallery of 50+ edited images, and personal print release. Add-ons include location permits, additional outfit changes, and save-the-date design coordination. Booking your engagement session with your wedding at the same time saves you $150.

Why this session is worth it

Beyond the beautiful gallery, engagement sessions let us find your posing rhythm, test your outfit choices under real light, and take the pressure off your wedding portraits — by then, I already know how you laugh, how you hold hands, and which side you both prefer to be photographed from.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is an engagement session?

60–90 minutes standard, which comfortably covers one outfit change and two locations if they're close together.

Can we bring our dog?

Please do — some of my favorite engagement frames involve dogs. I'll suggest dog-friendly locations and we'll schedule around your pup's energy.

Do you help pick the location?

Yes — I send three suggestions based on your vibe, the time of year, and your driving distance. You pick one and I handle scouting and parking.

Can we do an in-home lifestyle engagement session instead?

Absolutely — some of my favorite engagement sessions are morning-coffee-in-the-kitchen shoots. Beautifully intimate and totally on-brand for many couples.

What if we get engagement photos back and want to reshoot?

In the rare case you're not happy with the gallery, I'll reshoot at cost. It's happened twice in eight years — both times because of a wardrobe issue we caught together.

How far in advance should I book?

I book weddings 6–12 months ahead and portrait sessions 4–8 weeks out. Rush dates are sometimes possible — call me at 760-539-9932 and I'll check my calendar.

Do you travel across San Diego County?

Yes — every session includes free travel to all 26 cities in San Diego County, from Oceanside and Escondido down to Imperial Beach. I never charge mileage inside the county.
