San Diego Family Photography

Natural, joyful family portraits at the beach, park, or in your home. I'm Mikayla — a San Diego–based photographer chasing golden light across every coastal city, park, and canyon in the county. Over the past 8+ years I've delivered 400+ galleries for couples and families who wanted their real story told, not a stiff catalog of poses.

Family Photography in San Diego — my approach

I photograph families at every stage — newborns, first birthdays, big-kid milestones, teenage senior sessions, and multi-generational reunions. My approach is play-based for young kids and conversational for older ones, and I always shoot a mix of everyone-together portraits and candid in-between frames so you have both to print.

Common problems I solve

Your kids melt down during formal photos

I don't do 'sit still and smile' with kids under 6. We play. Chase, tickle, piggyback rides — those are my best family frames, and they end up on the fridge.

You never know when to book because kids change so fast

Annual family sessions are my recommendation — I offer returning-client pricing for families who book within 12 months of their last session.

The last family photographer only sent 10 finished images

My family galleries include 50+ edited high-resolution images minimum, delivered in 2–3 weeks with personal print release.

Grandparents want prints, not just a gallery link

I offer print packages and album design after delivery so the older generation gets something real to hold.

What's included

  • Pre-session consultation to plan location, timing, and outfits
  • Professional on-location direction and gentle posing
  • Full private online gallery with high-resolution edits
  • Personal print release for family and social sharing
  • Sneak peek gallery within 72 hours of the session
  • Access to fine-art print shop and heirloom albums

My process, start to finish

  1. 1. Inquiry & consult. Send a note or call 760-539-9932. I'll reply within 24 hours to talk timeline, location, and vision — no hard sell, just a real conversation about what you're picturing.
  2. 2. Book & plan. A 25% retainer holds your date. I send a full prep guide covering wardrobe palettes, kid-wrangling tricks, timeline math for weddings, and exactly when to arrive for the best golden-hour light at your chosen location.
  3. 3. Session day. Warm, patient, unhurried. I direct the whole time so you always know what to do — and still catch every real moment in between. For weddings I coordinate quietly with your planner, DJ, and family so the day flows.
  4. 4. Sneak peek & delivery. Sneak peeks in 72 hours. Full gallery in 2–6 weeks depending on the session type, delivered through a private online gallery you'll have forever. You can share, download, and print directly from the gallery.
  5. 5. Prints, albums, and beyond. After delivery I'm still here — I design heirloom albums, help you pick wall art sizes, and store your full-resolution gallery so you can order more prints years later.

Locations I love in San Diego

A few of my favorite San Diego spots for family photography — click any city for local tips, best shooting hours, parking notes, and my go-to backup locations:

Family favorites: Coronado dog beach at low tide, Windansea for sunset, Kate Sessions Park for city-skyline light, Balboa Park's rose garden, Lake Poway's shoreline, Kit Carson Park in Escondido, and countless backyards across the county. In-home lifestyle sessions available for newborns and rainy-day rescheduling.

Pricing & timeline

Family sessions start at $400 for a 60-minute shoot with 50+ edited images. Extended 90-minute sessions with more locations or extended-family groupings start at $550. Every family session includes location scouting, wardrobe direction, gallery delivery in two to three weeks, and personal print release.

Why this session is worth it

The family session you book this year becomes the photo on your fridge for the next decade. Kids grow fast, grandparents don't stay this age forever, and the annual family photo is one of the few things you'll never regret paying a professional for.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can be in a family session?

Standard sessions cover up to 8 people. Extended-family sessions (grandparents, siblings, spouses, kids) are priced starting at 90 minutes so we have time for combinations.

What should we wear?

Coordinated, not matching. Neutrals and one accent color read best on print. I send a full wardrobe guide with palette examples once booked.

Do you offer newborn sessions?

In-home lifestyle newborn sessions, yes — I don't do posed studio newborn work, but I love natural-light-through-the-window newborn frames.

Can we do a session at our home?

Yes — in-home lifestyle sessions are one of my favorite formats. I scout your best-light windows and we shoot in the rooms you actually live in.

What if our kid has a bad day?

It happens. I move fast, keep the mood light, and if we truly can't get the shot I offer a partial reshoot at no charge.

How far in advance should I book?

I book weddings 6–12 months ahead and portrait sessions 4–8 weeks out. Rush dates are sometimes possible — call me at 760-539-9932 and I'll check my calendar.

Do you travel across San Diego County?

Yes — every session includes free travel to all 26 cities in San Diego County, from Oceanside and Escondido down to Imperial Beach. I never charge mileage inside the county.
