Why I love shooting in Spring Valley

Spring Valley is rolling hills and quiet backroads. Sweetwater Reservoir gives you a huge open-water horizon most people forget exists inside San Diego County, and Steele Canyon's oak-lined fairways photograph like a private estate. I lean into the space here — wide portraits, tiny people, big hills.

On the light: The hills sit east-west, so sunset light rakes horizontally across the landscape and turns dry grass gold for a full 20 minutes.

Logistics worth knowing: Steele Canyon requires member sponsorship for portrait sessions on the course — I usually shoot at the clubhouse patio or the surrounding trails instead.
