San Marcos is my grad-portrait capital. Cal State San Marcos's hillside campus has a distinctive concrete-and-glass architecture that photographs modern and clean, and Discovery Lake's boardwalk is a favorite for family sessions with older kids. Lake San Marcos itself is quieter than most guides suggest.
On the light: The hillside campus catches west-facing light for a full hour after sunset thanks to elevation — my top grad-portrait golden-hour location in the county.
Logistics worth knowing: CSUSM is technically an active campus — I book grad sessions during quiet hours (early morning or late afternoon on weekends) to avoid competing with foot traffic.
